The first ever Solvang Danish Days festival emerged in 1936 to commemorate the city’s 25th anniversary. Ever since then, the festival has grown to encompass a fun range of activities to celebrate Solvang’s unique heritage.
Authentic food, dancing, music, live entertainment, parades, and family activities are some of festivities that take place.
Solvang was relatively shrouded in mystery until a reporter from The Saturday Evening Post covered one of their festivals in 1946 and revealed the city’s unique characteristics to a wider public.
In January, 1946 the reporter wrote, “Solvang…a spotless Danish village that blooms like a rose in California’s charming Santa Ynez Valley…Old country charm and customs have been successfully fused with the American way of life. Nowadays, the quaint village is busy living up to its affectionate name, ‘Little Denmark….”
The festival has grown by leaps and bounds in the last decade, making it a perfect time for visitors to experience the city. Through the years, the Solvang Danish Days festival has become a signature event of the city, taking place each September.
