Visiting Solvang: What to Do in The Little Denmark Of California

Updated: Aug 12, 2022

Even though it’s a quiet small town, it’s not the same as most other Californian towns. Whether you’re driving through the streets of this small touristy village or are surrounded by the majestic rolling hills of Santa Inez Valley—you’ll get a strong taste of Europe.

The shops and the restaurants, too, will remind you of the quintessential Danish architecture. Much credit could be given to the early Danish settlers, who ensured that the historically illustrious heritage was maintained in everything they built.

If you’re packing your bags for your first trip to Solvang, here’s what you can do:

Cycling

The possibilities of family activities in Solvang are endless. It’s a common sight to see families and kids explore the town on four-wheeled surrey cycles. If you’re new to the city, there are many easy-to-ride rentals available at affordable rates. Whether you want some slowed down family or need a mid-level strenuous ride—the town has something or the other for everyone. When you cycle through the Central Coast of California, you can discover the lush green countryside, miniature horses, windmills, wine fields, and the Hans Christian Andersen Park.

Golfing

Nothing gives you a sight of the scenic rolling hills like golfing. The Alisal River Course situated on the south of Mission Drive offers a generous view of most of the Santa Ynez River Valley. The course is located against the Santa Ynez Mountain backdrop and on the banks of the Santa Ynez River. Cheerful elderberry trees and oaks punctuate the course setting. Other than the game itself, you can treat yourself at the rustic restaurant nearby. The championship course itself is around 6,380 yards and has all the amenities for golfers of all skill levels.

Wine tours

Wine lovers are in for a treat in Solvang because there are as many as 120 vibrant vineyard and wineries in the area. If you head to downtown Solvang, you’ll find as many as 20 different boutique and family-owned tasting rooms. Most wineries welcome tourists and visitors all year round. You can opt for both—self-directed and guided tours.

In fact, the famous Oscar-winning 2004 movie Sideways was shot throughout the wine fields of Solvang and Santa Ynez Valley. While you’re at the wine tour, you can catch a glimpse of all the places in the wine country where Miles and Jack shot their misadventures.
