Solvang was founded in 1911 by Danish-American settlers who wanted to establish a community where they could preserve their cultural traditions. The town’s name means “sunny field” in Danish, a fitting description of its setting in the sunlit Santa Ynez Valley.
Today, Solvang is known for its half-timbered buildings, decorative windmills, Danish flags, and European-style storefronts. Much of the recognizable Danish-village appearance developed after World War II, when the community embraced Danish-inspired architectural designs. Walking through downtown feels like stepping into a storybook. Visitors can browse specialty shops, photograph historic-looking facades, relax at outdoor cafés, and discover small courtyards tucked between the main streets.
