Dreaming of Sicily: 3 Cal-Ital Wines to Try This Month

Updated: Sep 17, 2022

Sicily Dreaming

Italian wines are some of the best in the world. However, Americans who can’t make their way to Italy just for a wine tasting can indulge in the godliness of an exquisitely created wine at home.

Many Californian vineyards are now producing wines made from Italian grapes, grown locally. Referred to as Cal-Ital wines, they have become quite the trend among local wine enthusiasts.

These Cal-Ital wines have enabled local wineries to produce some amazing Italian wines such as barbera, nebbiolo and even sangiovese, right here at home. And with an onslaught of wine drinkers in search of something different, Cal-Ital wines are certainly catching on.

3 Favorite Italian Varietals – Our Recommendations!

With moderate prices and a promise of exquisite Italian flavors, these are some of our favorite Cal-Ital wines.

· Bailiwick 2012 Vermentino

Bone dry with a crisp acidity, the Vermentino offers a rick orange and tropical fruit palette, with honeysuckle and vanilla flavors clearly noticeable. This beautiful mineral white wine will delight you with the citrus touch.

· Clendenen 2005 Bricco Buon Natale Nebbiolo

Exquisitely mystifying, the Natale Nebbiolo is a deeply rich, red wine. It’s filled with tar, rose petals and dried fruit, with aromas and flavors of cherry and dried rose. After all, what else do you expect from a complex wine that has been aged 5 years to perfection, in a barrel? Nothing, but Italian excellence!

· La Folia 2011 Barbera

Gorgeous aromas of baked cherry and a strong cinnamon flavor will place you right in the heart of Italy. The lovely wine is faultless from start to finish. Enjoy a glass of 100% Barbera with a gourmet Italian pizza or spaghetti carbonara; you won’t regret it!

Whites and Reds: Honorable Cal-Ital Mentions

Pinot Grigio is one of the most loved Italian white wines. And now it is grown very well in cooler climates of California. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc is also being grown here at home.

Among reds, Nebbiolo certainly caught our attention instantly. The Barolo grapes used to make it now exist in California. And local Clendenen family vineyards are taking advantage of the fact.
