The word vintage originates from the word “vendange”, which is Latin for wine.

Most wine producers mention the year of the harvest on the label. Being able to fully understand the difference between vintage wines can help you select ones that resonate most with you. If you’re a wine collector, the vintage element of it holds paramount importance.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild is a vintage wine dating back to 1787. It was auctioned at Christie’s of London in the year 1985, and is considered to be the priciest bottle of wine at $156,450. Michael Broadbent, the head of Christie’s wine department when the auction took place, confirmed with the house’s glass experts that the bottle and the design originated far back to the 18th century. Also, the wine’s legitimacy can be backed up by history as Jefferson served as America’s Minister to France between the years 1785 – 1789. Jefferson was a wine expert and allegedly brought back with him to the United States around $120,000 worth of wine.
